My teaching portfolio includes skills-based courses, such as Professional Writing and Public Speaking, as well as some which are more exploratory such as Communication Ethics and Nonviolent Communication. In each of these courses, I use a variety of approaches to using technology (for feedback, for in-class research, for out-of-class preparation), and interactive activities (such as using Instagram for introductions in first year, and an exercise in getting as frustrated as possible when creating challenging origami designs in fourth year).
Einstein notably stated, “I never teach my pupils. I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn.” As an academic professional, I believe that I have the responsibility to create an environment that is conducive to learning. I do this by setting a supportive, constructive relationship between and amongst myself and my students. This positive environment offers a fertile ground so that students can learn how to learn, and also have confidence in continuing to do so not only in class, but also as lifelong learners.
I am the recipient of a variety of teaching awards, including the UOIT Faculty Teaching Award (twice), and the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities Teaching Award.
